Description
The Alocasia Zebrina is one of the most popular tropical plants of the moment. This special variegated variety makes it even more special. This plant is a real collector’s item for the special plant collector. The green parts of the leaves contrast nicely with the white variegated parts. The beautiful zebra pattern on the stems makes it complete.
The Alocasia Zebrina originates from the tropical part of Asia. This plant is also called elephant ear, because of the enormous size that the leaves can take. Animals in the rainforest also use the leaves for shelter. Fun fact: herbivores don’t see the stems of the plant! These animals are often color blind and the striped pattern on the stems of the Zebrina makes the plant well camouflaged.
This variegated Alocasia Zebrina is a bit more sensitive than the green variety, because of the variegated leaves. By giving the plant a high humidity, sufficient nutrition, water and light, you stimulate the variegation. Variegation remains a mutation and there is no guarantee that it will continue. The Alocasia Zebrina likes to be in a light spot, possibly with a few hours of direct sunlight. With a window on the north or east is therefore perfect! Make sure the soil never dries out completely and always remains slightly moist. With too much or too little water, the stems will hang, which you naturally want to prevent. The Alocasia can sometimes drip, a process called guttation. The plant releases excess water through the leaves, which can sometimes cause spots.
